Beta-blocking drugs have been given to heart patients for more than 40 years!!!
Scientists have only recently discovered that they have almost no heart-protective effects though!
These drugs are routinely given to people who have heart attacks or with coronary artery disease. But, researchers have found that those patients taking the drugs are just as likely to have a second heart attack or stroke as those who aren’t.
This was found in a 3 year study by New York’s University’s School of Medicine who tracked nearly 45,000 patients. Beta-blockers were also criticised in 2009 when they were found to be ineffective in reducing high blood pressure (hypertension), even though they have been the first-line of treatment for many years. The drugs don’t only NOT work well but they also increase the risk of patients developing Type 2 Diabetes by 30%. Significant in patients who already have these problems.

- Atenolol (Tenormin)
- Propranolol (Inderal LA)
- Timolol (Betim, Prestim)
- Oxprenolol (Trasicor)
- Acebutolol (Sectral )
