Welcoming a baby into the world is an exciting time for any new parent, but it can be full of unwelcome stresses too. Here are Nutritional Therapist, Natalie Lamb’s top tips to give your baby the best start in life.

  • Developing a balanced gut flora plays an essential role in supporting strong immune and digestive systems, influenced by birthing methods, breastfeeding and early antibiotic use. Live bacteria supplements have been shown to help support a healthy gut flora.
  • Breast milk is a natural source of continuous bacteria and the good bacteria Bifidobacteria has been found to be the predominant species in a breast fed infant’s gut.
  • Vitamin D ‘the sunshine vitamin’ is extremely important for ensuring a strong immune system and is often found to be low in infants and mothers in the UK – sensible summer sun exposure or supplementation are now recommended.
  • Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids play an important role in early brain development and cognitive function, and appear to have antiinflammatory effects on the immature and developing infant immune system. Pregnant and breast feeding mothers are recommended to consume 2-4 portions a week of oily fish, avocados, nuts and seeds.
  • Many are now suggesting the benefits of the mother staying as calm and relaxed as possible around a new born infant – accept as much help as possible from friends and family to make the first few days and weeks as special as possible.

An as Osteopath, I often see babies whose digestion and gut health is compromised through the early use of anti-biotics as well as for other reasons too. If their gut health is improved – everything improves! The easiest way for me to help Mums increase this if they are breast feeding is for the Mums to take a strong pro-biotic such as GNLD’s acidophilus which I stock at the clinic. (http://www.livingelements.co.uk/abd/shop/acidophilus-plus-p-81.html)

But now for babies fed on formula their is another option by Bio-Kult called “Infantis”. This is available in high street shops.

Upset tummies can lead to more colic, posseting, diarrhoea etc and this may be just one way to help.

ALWAYS take your baby to see a paediatric cranial Osteopath, such as Gayle Palmer D.O. as early as you can if your child is having problems with their digestion and growth as this can often be helped using Osteopathy and the correct diet etc. Call Gayle on 01243 641665 to book your appointment.
