Common misconceptions about health #2

Strong beliefs and convictions can stop you from discovering the truth about a situation or a way forward. We stop listening. We stop being willing to consider another possibility.

In health this can lead to poor health outcomes and incorrect actions being taken. The result can lead away from health and towards more dysfunction.

Here are some misconceptions which are NOT helpful:

“My pain and limited function mean there’s “nothing” I can do.”

People catastrophize about the meaning of pain and become trapped in a vicious cycle of avoidance behaviour, pain and disability.

A physical therapist, such as an Osteopath, can help to interpret pain and use exercise and other modalities to break this cycle. It is easy to make an appointment online HERE

“Bending and lifting will make my back pain worse.”

It may be painful or uncomfortable to bend and lift without pain, but developing the mobility and strength to do this is important.

Many types of exercise, including weight training, can bring great benefits to your back and health generally.

“I am causing damage if it hurts.”

The level of pain experienced is often NOT a good measure of injury or tissue damage. Even if an activity of painful, it is not an accurate sign of doing harm. Think a paper cut to a finger.

An Osteopath can help you to develop a programme for you to move safely, including ways to lift and move safely and more efficiently.
