Strokes – what are they and how can I help?

Knowing what it is, the signs and what to do are very important, and can save a life.

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients.

Brain cells start to die within minutes.

Speed is essential as taking immediate action in the early stages can totally change the outcomes later, and for years.

CALL 999. Get emergency help ASAP.

Ensure the patient is safe, kept warm.

Make a note of all their medication if you know what it is.

They are likely to be taken to hospital so packing some essentials and ID is useful as they may be confused and unable to communicate for themselves.

TIA’s (transient ischaemic attacks) are mini strokes – cause fewer problems but none the less should be acted upon. Often characterised as “having a little turn” they self resolve over a few days.

Cranial Osteopathy and traditional techniques can help after a stroke, along with osteopathic advice about diet, exercise and other measures. Ask Gayle for more information.
