The Vertebral Column or spine
The Vertebral Column or spine is a remarkably complicated but effective structure which has multiple uses and functions.
Although they can often cause us problems the engineering involved to produce the functions that require is genius, and it is still work in progress – like everything else in life.

Did you know….
There are 7 cervical (neck) vertebra
12 thoracic (upper back) vertebra
5 lumbar (lower back) vertebra
5 fused sacral vertebra
5-6 fused coccygeal vertebra
Altogether they make up a formidable list of capabilities and functions. Here are just some of them:
protection of the spinal cord and central nerve supply
A stable structure from which the rest of the musculature can operate from
Provides joint attachments for other bones – eg the ribs
Muscle attachment frame
Allows flexibility for movement in all directions
A connection between the lower pelvis and the upper thoracic girdle
Helps you to move from one posture to another – sit to stand etc
To allow the weight transference through the body as you move through space
Protection for your major blood vessels
Protection for your vital organs
