Prevent Falls in the Winter

No one wants to fall over, but especially for the elderly there is an increased risk due to age, balance, vision clarity and loss of strength.

Falls in the winter can be especially easy as the weather and temperature play a greater role.

Therefore it makes sense to know how to PREVENT them, doesn't it?

Here are some top tips to consider, and actions to take to reduce the risks:-

  1. First and foremost - wear sensible footwear! esp if you are just "popping out to feed the birds on a frosty morning".

Non-slip soles are essential. If you need to, WAIT until the ice from a frost has passed before venturing out.

2. LOOK before you launch! Be mindful of ice, puddles or muddy patches which may cause you to slip and slide. Take smaller steps, and hold onto something for support if your balance is wobbly.

3. If you are wobbly with your balance - have a handrail installed - whether inside or outside ASAP - stop putting it off! This simple device can save a broken hip.

4. Keep your pathways clear of mud, leaves, debris and if possible puddles!

Make sure that they are level - badly abutting paviors are trip hazards - and it only takes a moments loss of concentration to fall over. If this means spending some money - DO IT! It is an investment in your health.

5. Preventing falls is often about being aware, being healthy and having quick reflexes.

The best way is to STAY ACTIVE as much as possible.

*Taking regular exercise - especially walking helps to maintain muscle strength and joint mobility.

*Practising foot and hand co-ordination is also important - it builds adaptability eg catching a ball; enhances balance and speed of reflex reactions. Gayle can give you more specific exercises and help with this.
