6 top tips to help neck pain

Neck pain is common – Each year, millions of people in the UK grapple with the challenges of neck pain, seeking relief from its pervasive grip on their daily activities.

Neck pain is a pervasive issue that affects a significant portion of the population in the United Kingdom, causing discomfort and inconvenience for many. According to statistics, neck pain is a prevalent concern, with a substantial impact on daily life.

As we delve into potential solutions for neck pain, it’s crucial to understand the prevalence and impact of this condition on people’s lives.

STRETCHING

Incorporate stretching exercises into your daily routine to help relieve neck pain.

These can be chin tucks, side bends (side of head towards shoulder tip) and shoulder rolls, both ways.

POSTURE

Pay attention to your posture, especially when sitting at a desk or using a computer.

Keep your shoulders relaxed and your head in a neutral position. Remind yourself often!

MASSAGE

Massaging and manipulating the neck can relieve tension and reduce pain.

Use your hands or a massage ball to apply pressure to the affected area.

Don’t get rough! Causing tissue damage won’t help. A few minutes is usually sufficient.

HEAT THERAPY

Applying heat can also reduce the pain and stiffness by increasing the local blood supply. You can use a heating pad, a warmed towel, hot water bottle which is well wrapped up or take a warm shower.

SEEK HELP Earlier than later

If your neck pain persists or is severe – seek professional help from someone who is an expert in musculo-skeletal problems eg your Osteopath, not just a generalist. I can diagnose the underlying cause of your neck pain and provide appropriate treatment promptly and effectively.

EXERCISE

Regular exercise helps to strengthen your muscles that support your neck and upper back. Low impact exercises such as walking, swimming (probably not breast stroke) and yoga are great options to consider.

Try not to hold your achy neck stiff – it will aggravate the problem.
